Pauline Jones, Principal at Jones Associates, has two apartments in Es Pujols on the Spanish Balearic island of Formentera. Pauline and her husband bought the first one 20 years ago because they liked the place so much they just wanted to keep going back. 10 years later they bought the apartment next door as an investment. She and her husband spend three weeks a year there and let the apartments the rest of the season.

They were able to buy very, very cheap because it was before the island became trendy. They weren't looking for future gains on them, but they certainly have gained. They paid £20,000 for the first apartment, which is now worth £175,000.

They advertise their apartment on a website for people who have overseas properties available to let, but most of the people who go, go year after year. While owning overseas has been a good experience for them, Pauline does offer caution. "For anybody buying for an investment or for their own use, it has to be a place where they don't mind spending every holiday. If you are not going to keep going back, it could become a millstone. You've got to keep it maintained and cared for".
